En 2009, l'ancien journaliste, romancier, scénariste et parolier faisait son entrée à l'Académie française. Dans son discours de bienvenue, Frédéric Vitoux, lui même reçu en 2003, rappelait que l'institution honorait ainsi une de ses traditions, "celle des écrivains légers, des hommes d'esprit, des saltimbanques".
