Creation of the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA)

The AFSSA (Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Aliments) has just been created to deal with the resurgence of bacteriological contamination of food. Martin Hirsch was appointed head of this agency, which has laboratories throughout France. The Director explained that it should be able to mobilise all scientific expertise on food, GMO and water issues.
