Excerpt from the first televised address of Pope Pius XII

This is the first time that a pope addresses himself directly to the viewers, speaking face-to-face camera. Seated on his throne, Pius XII calls Christians to rejoice on this Easter day, because of the resurrection of Christ. He takes a very solemn tone, makes great gestures with his arms as a sign of communion, looks to heaven, recalling "Christians united in faith and hope". He also rejoices in this new means of communication which enables him to address the faithful of the whole world.
