Statement by General Charles de Gaulle after the Algiers coup

On Saturday, April 22, 1961, a coup de force took place in Algiers. Generals Challe, Salan, Zeller and Jouhaud established themselves in "high command". With the support of the first regiment of paratroopers, they wanted to try to put an end to Algeria’s policy of self-determination approved by referendum on January 8, 1961. On 23 April, President Charles de GAULLE addressed the nation to condemn this act.
