Dans la nuit du réveillon de Noël 1972, Pierrette et Jacques Méchinaud, ainsi que leurs deux jeunes enfants, Eric et Bruno, disparaissent dans leur Simca 1100 entre Cognac et Boutiers, en Charente, sans laisser de trace, comme s'ils s'étaient littéralement volatilisés dans le brouillard. Malgré de multiples sondages du fleuve Charente, aucun indice ne viendra jamais aider les gendarmes. C'est un cas unique en France de disparition totale de toute une famille.
