Struggle over power in Algeria where Ben Youssef BEN KHEDDA, president of the GPRA (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) agrees to erase himself in front of the pre-eminence of the Political Bureau founded by Ahmed BEN BELLA. Televised intervention by BEN KHEDDA, head of government. - "... There is the problem of the integration of the NLA and more particularly that of the borders... (This question can only) be decided within the framework of the People’s National Army.... Some officers who lived outside did not know the revolutionary war as that of the maquis... The people were the main artisan of independence.... This dangerous conception (that which gives primacy to the army) leads to underestimating the people, even to despise them and creates the danger of seeing the birth of a feudalism or a militaristic caste such as exists in some underdeveloped countries, as in Latin America.... The revolution is not the work of a fraction of the people.... The linchpin is the militant with or without uniform, whether he is in the FLN, the ALN, the unions or any other organization... The army is in the service of the nation. It is not the source of power... This origin (of power) can only be the people... This is the basic idea of our revolution and of all democracy."

On the occasion of the first anniversary of Algeria’s independence, Michel PERICARD met with Hocine AIT AHMED (who was one of the leaders of the historic FLN). The latter declares of "Everything goes wrong in Algeria". In favour of political pluralism and democracy, he attributes the silence of the deputies to the fear of the power in place embodied by BEN BELLA. Hocine AIT AHMED reportedly left Algiers the day after the interview granted to "Five columns in the front page".

In Rocher Noir near Algiers, two weeks after the signing of the Evian agreements on the ceasefire in Algeria and the right of Algerians to self-determination, Abderrhamane FARÈS, President of the Provisional Executive of the GPRA (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic) made a speech in which he called on all Europeans and all Algerians to support tomorrow’s Algeria: "If you do not want to insult the future...it is together that we will build, against all odds, the solid foundations of the Algerian state of tomorrow".

Georges BORTOLI interviews Fehrat ABBAS, former leader of the UDMA (Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto) who officially joined the FLN in 1956. This one evokes the support of French intellectuals during the Algerian War, like François MAURIAC, who recalled that the ten million Muslims of Algeria were not French citizens in their own right. He recalls the status of Algerians, the French on one side and the French Muslim subject on the other. On this occasion, he returns to the annexation of Algeria by France in 1834 which did not give French citizenship to the Muslims of Algeria.

In Algiers, while serious dissensions divide the GPRA (Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic), Mohamed BOUDIAF and Belkacem KRIM (present to his left) recognized the pre-eminence of the political bureau led by Ahmed BEN BELLA. He declares: "The duty of every militant and every responsible person is to work tirelessly in the direction of unity and national cohesion... I trust my country...". A month and a half later, on September 20, 1962, Mohamed BOUDIAF founded his own party, the PRS (Party of the Socialist Revolution) in opposition to the Algerian National Constituent Assembly which invested BEN BELLA as president of the council.

The leader of the FLN declares: "This day is the day of the victory of the people who, thanks to their political conscience and their revolutionary vigilance, knew how to safeguard the unity of our ranks. The union of the people and its leaders is the best guarantee for the achievement of the historical objectives we set for ourselves on November 1, 1954. On this historic day, our thoughts are with our fallen brothers and sisters. The Political Bureau is reaching out to all activists, all activists, to rally around it for the construction of a democratic state where brotherhood and prosperity reign."
