Televised speech by Nicolae Ceausescu
Nicolae CEAUSESCU, Head of State and Party of Romania, during a radio and television address on his return from his official trip to Iran, violently denounced the demonstrators in Timisoara and acknowledged that the army had intervened on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17. More than 50,000 people marched in the city, while numerous strikes broke out in the country. Speech by Nicolae CEAUSESCU (in Romanian, translation off) on the return of his official visit to Iran: "On 16 and 17 December, under the pretext of preventing the implementation of a court order, some hooligan groups organized a series of demonstrations... demonstrations aimed directly at state institutions, destroying and pillaging stores and public buildings. Since the actions of the terrorist groups continued, in accordance with the constitution and the law, the military units were forced to defend themselves, forced to defend the public order and property of the city. We can state with certainty that these terrorist actions were organized and triggered in close links with chauvinistic imperialist reactionaries and with the support of some counter-espionage services, in particular that of Hungary".
