Statement by Georges Pompidou

During a press conference, following the decision of General de Gaulle not to continue his presidential term, the former Prime Minister and current deputy of Cantal, Georges POMPIDOU announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Republic for the 1969 elections. Sitting behind his desk he declares: "I have decided to stand for the French vote.", he is aware "to obey his duty and has the will to maintain a necessary continuity and stability" with the hope of preparing for the future.
