The President of the Republic François MITTERRAND received Mikhail GORBATCHEV and his wife in his private residence in Latche. On the sidelines of the Madrid conference, the two heads of state wanted to show an image of solidarity among themselves in order to counter the criticism aroused by the French attitude during the Moscow coup (France had in fact initially recognized de facto the government of the coup).
