Le ministre de la Défense, Jean-Pierre Chevènement, a adressé une lettre aux 45 généraux du cadre de réserve qui avaient signé une pétition en faveur de Jacques Chirac avant le 2ème tour des Présidentielles, les informant qu'ils seraient mis à la retraite d'office s'ils continuaient à ne pas respecter leur devoir de réserve.
