Statement by the defeated candidate in the second round of the presidential election, Prime Minister Jacques CHIRAC. - "The French have decided to entrust the responsibility of the State to Mr. Mitterrand. In a democracy, the people are the masters and I bow to their choice. I thank all those who have trusted me and whose fervent support has been beyond reproach. For two years, I implemented in our country a new policy based on greater freedom, greater justice, better security. During the election campaign, I proposed to the French a new republican pact, committing our country to build its future within Europe, giving it the means to be stronger and more united, better defended and more respected. I wish France good luck and the French good luck. Whatever happens, all those who have gathered around my candidacy are bearers of hope. This hope, together we will make it live, we will make it grow in the Union."
