French coal mines: coal and electricity

Report on the construction and modernization of thermal power plants in France as part of the increase in energy needs. In order to complement the production of hydroelectric power plants, between 1938 and 1949 the territory developed and modernized its thermal infrastructure to meet the growing demand for electricity. Sixteen coal-fired power stations were built, notably in the Nord Pas de Calais basin and the old sites were modernised and retrofitted. The production of electricity from mining sources is expected to increase threefold in ten years. Sequences and aerial views show factories, smoked chimneys, hydraulic dams and machinery.
