United States: Mercury-Atlas Space Program 6. Astronaut John GLENN is the first American astronaut to make an orbital space flight around the Earth on 20 February 1962. John GLENN takes off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard the capsule Friendship 7. The destroyer Noa, ship of the American navy, retrieves it a few hours later, in the Caribbean Sea. It is transported by helicopter on an aircraft carrier.
