The Paralympic Games began in 1948, on the initiative of Sir Ludwig Guttmann. The German neurologist at the time was looking for a way to speed up the recovery of his seriously injured patients, all veterans of the Second World War. Held every four years, the Paralympic Games are much more than a celebration of sporting performance. It is a competition that highlights men and women who have transformed their physical, visual or mental disabilities into strength.
