Laurent Schwartz, first French mathematician to win the Fields Medal in 1950

Laurent SCHWARTZ, the first French mathematician to win the Fields Medal in 1950 for his theory of "distributions", remembers a certain night during which he was conscious of solving in a very short time the problems that had interested him for a long time. It evokes the brevity of the time of discovery in mathematics, the processes and chances that preside over its accomplishment. He asserts that "to advance mathematics, one must be very bold... and therefore very young."
