Un an après sa défaite à l'élection présidentielle, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing évoque, face à Josette Alia ("Nouvel Observateur"), son état d'esprit face au choix des Français, ainsi que les deux raisons, selon lui, de son départ de l'Elysée : "Il y avait la crise, et c'était trop long..."
