Jean-François Delfraissy and AIDS research
Twenty years ago, Professor Luc Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute announced the discovery of the HTLV virus. It was the object of a bitter battle with American researchers, the virus was dubbed HIV. Françoise Barret Sinoussi, a young researcher, Jean-Claude Chermann and Luc Montagnier isolated in their microscope the person responsible for this then unknown disease: AIDS. 20 years after the virus is still very active and AIDS has become a chronic disease but under treatment. Sorting therapy was a miraculous treatment but for two years it has shown its limitations and its often serious side effects. A look back at the progress made in recent years, up to the experimental vaccine on HIV-positive volunteers. The results are encouraging and show that treatment can be suspended for a while. However the vaccine will not be ready for 5 years, and many AIDS patients are failing treatment. Commentary on archival images and infographics, and interviews with Professor Jean-François DELFRAISSY, Head of Internal Medicine at the Centre hospitalier de Bicêtre
