1939-1945 Franco-German armistice of 40

After the defeat of France, Marshal Pétain, the new head of government of France, requested an armistice from Germany. It was signed on 22 June 1940, in accordance with Hitler’s wishes, in Rethondes in the Compiègne forest, inside the rail carriage where the armistice of 11 November 1918 was signed.
