The historian André KASPI summarizes the history of Palestine in the first half of the 20th century. The division of the Middle East was made between the belligerents, and more particularly between France and England, even before the end of the First World War. It is Great Britain that has the mandate over Palestine after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire. In the Balfour Declaration of November 1917, the British granted Jews "a national home" in Palestine, without specifying what this term covers.
